BPS Sports Club in Margao goes Solar to offset its electricity bills

Location: Margao

Capacity: 50 kW solar power plant

Components: Jakson 555 Wp solar panels (91), 50 kW Polycab inverter, FRP walkway, long rail structure.

BPS Sports Club is a proactive community that works towards promoting sports in Goa. Since the 1940s, the club has been annually organizing tournaments in Table Tennis, Lawn Tennis, Chess, Badminton, Carrom, Scrabble, and Dart. It has adopted a holistic approach toward the growth of sports by regularly conducting coaching classes for various sports. Everyday the club caters to the sports and cultural activities for children, youth, and elderly who regularly use the amenities in the club.

The club has a spacious area housing a clubhouse, conference halls, children’s park, restaurant, well-equipped gym, outdoor tennis and badminton courts, and an exhibition ground that covers 1850 sq mts. The all-weather pandal is a place where the club hosts exhibitions, fairs, weddings, and other cultural activities. To provide a power supply for these multiple activities, the club was incurring a heavy electricity bill every month. So, the committee decided to monetize the dome-shaped roof of the pavilion. Team Sun360 was assigned the solar rooftop project at the club.

The engineers designed a 50 kW solar plant with over 91 solar panels. The latest 555 Wp mono-facial Jakson modules were connected to a 50 kW Polycab inverter. Long rails were installed on the dome-shaped metal sheet roof to fix the modules in portrait mode. These panels were set up in three rows with the support of 6 long rails over the roof. The plant also has FRP walkways installed to help carry out safe maintenance and servicing, without causing damage to the metal sheets.

Highlighting the features and benefits of the modules and inverters installed by SUN360:

– These next-gen modules have best-in-class efficiency of 21.39% with a linear performance warranty of 25 years. The linear warranty gives an edge to these panels as they work at 97.5% efficiency and then linearly narrow down to 81.9% till the 25th year.

– The Multi bus-bar (MBB) technology has reduced its resistive losses leading to excellent performance, providing a higher power output and high reliability compared to the much prevalent PERC modules.

– The half-cut cell design ensures excellent performance even under partial shading conditions

– Polycab 50 kW inverter is a transformerless inverter that converts and transfers the power directly from the inverter to the load attached.

– Its efficiency is over 98.9% which can be remotely monitored on mobile and web applications.

– The inverter has a wide MPPT (Maximum Power Point Tracker) voltage range. It ensures that the plant starts generating as early as 6 am and concludes the generation even as late as 7 pm while still generating the maximum power during the noon.

Here is quoting Mr. Santosh George, the President of the BPS Club, “Previously, we used to receive a monthly bill ranging from INR 70,000 to 80,000. To address these expenses, the managing committee of the BPS Sports Club decided to harness solar energy. After calling for tenders, we selected SUN360 to execute the solar project. The SUN360 team exhibited exceptional team spirit, work ethics, skill set, and organizational abilities. Our solar project has had a significant impact on society, inspiring numerous institutions, clubs, and residential societies to consider adopting solar energy as well.

Our club, including the badminton court, tennis court, and indoor sports arena, is now powered by the sun’s energy, bringing joy to over 200 children and teenagers who utilize these facilities daily.”

A local youth, an avid badminton player at the BPS Sports Club, expresses his pride in the club’s adoption of solar energy, stating, “As someone who regularly practices badminton here, it fills me with immense pride to know that all the amenities I enjoy are now powered by the sun. It’s amazing to witness the positive impact this solar project has on the environment and the community. I hope this encourages more institutions and individuals to embrace sustainable energy solutions.”

The solar plant at this historically renowned sports club is in the final stages of the commissioning process. Once it is ready, the club and its members will set an example of a sustainable lifestyle in the locality.

Some of the benefits that the club will reap once the plant is fully operational are:

  • They will save over 3.75 lakhs during the first year from electricity bills.
  • Over the next 25 years, the club will save over INR 1 crore in electricity billings.
  • Moreover, the carbon not emitted through the solar power plant would be equivalent to planting 2,300 trees.

Now the local community members take immense pride in utilizing the facilities at BPS Sports Club. Today, it is emerging as a catalyst for social change, spearheading the adoption of solar energy to power its amenities and inspiring others to follow the same.
